Plenty will claim to. Some say he got in a fight with a rival company, a confrontation gone sour between another band member, some even began to spin this elaborate story of a crazed fan who couldn't bare the thought of the object of her affection's eye being anywhere else but on her. Whatever the case, the event got the media's attention and the blonde sax player never seemed to shy from it.
In fact, he flaunted it.
From eye designs embroidered on his flashy clothes, a multitude of styled eye patches and a different glass eye depending on his mood, it almost seemed as though Bill relished taunting the world about the questions they couldn't ask.
Ask me how it happened. Ask me if I did it. Ask me how I did it. Ask me why I did it.
Not that he would ever give a straight answer if anyone did. Whatever the rumors, there was never substantial evidence to point the ordeal one way or another. If the record company had taken their star away to question him, they certainly kept the answers hush hush. Why wouldn't they? Controversy sells.
Many loyal to the rising star's fame are quick to defend him and his tragic accident. The poor man is merely eccentric! He already uses mystery as part of his gimmick, such as the way he releases puzzles and riddles to his fans about upcoming projects and puts backwards messages in his songs, it's brave that he can carry his deformity publicly without humiliation!
It's a much easier answer to swallow than the uncertain alternatives.
Who would ever be crazy enough to deliberately mutilate themselves for the sake of fame?
But... there are moments where there is something off about him. The way he doesn't smile quite right, like his teeth are pulled back a touch too far to not be considered menacing, the way his thin pupils and overly long lashes seemed to constantly be watching another world apart from the one he is. That laugh.
